Glossary

Becoming a student in Uppsala means you run into a lot of strange words and concepts. Here we have tried to list the most common ones so that you are ready to enter the extraordinary world that is the Uppsala student life!

1Q (short for first curator)

The nation’s public face and the one who has the overall responsibility for all of the nation’s activities. The 1Q is usually called “the spider in the web”. You can turn to them with questions about anything. If they can’t answer your question, they will know who to turn to. The 1Q is elected by the Landskap and is in office full-time for one year (January to December).

2Q (short for second curator)

Runs the day-to-day financial activities of the nation. Manages accounting, payment of salaries and other things that have to do with numbers. The 2Q is elected by the Landskap and is in office full-time for one year (July to June).

3Q (short for third curator)

Responsible for the day-to-day activities like the pub, club and gasks. Employs staff, cares for the club work, has responsibility over cleaning, supplies, hygiene and everything possible and impossible. Turn to them if you want to work at the nation! The 3Q is elected by the Landskap and is in office full-time for one year (January to December).

Bommen

Short for “Söderbomska huset”, the yellow building next to the main nation building. Also called the “other side” while being in main nation building (funnily enough, the main building is also called “the other side”, while being at Bommen). Our curator’s expedition. Here, the curators and the masters have their offices. Every day 1Q and 2Q have reception hours where you are welcome with all your questions. The reception hours can be found under Contact.

Cleaning gasks (Poleringsgask)

The nation’s cleaning day! Everyone is welcome to help clean. Ends with a fun informal dinner.

Club work

The club work staff the pub, club, gasks and big events at the nation, usually by standing behind a bar or in the kitchen. Being a club worker is a lot of work, but amazing, incredible fun. By becoming a club worker you get a new little family that you share blood, sweat, tears and many, many laughs with. As a thank you, you get to take part in an additional dimension of the nation. Contact 1Q or 3Q for more information!

Formal dress (=white tie)

Tail coat, long dress, folk dress or military ceremonial dress. Used during balls.

Full-timers

Those who are full-time employees at the nation. That is, the three curators and the three masters.

Gask

A fancy dinner with good food and drinks, traditions and entertainment. According to many the most fun thing you can do at the nations, and a great way to be introduced to Uppsala student life. At a gask you get to experience a lot of classic Uppsala traditions, a wonderful world of its own. You can expect a lot of singing! The dress code is usually suit or knee-long dress. Gask is sometimes spelled gasque.

Inspector

Traditionally (that means way back in the 1600s) this person was a professor at the university whose role was to keep track of the students so that they actually studied and not just partied. Today, the inspector (who is still a professor at the university) has a more ceremonial role, and supports the curators with a long-term perspective. At Värmlands, it is always the inspector who holds the “thank you speech” on gasks and balls. From 2004 the nation’s inspector has been professor Lars Burman, head librarian at the university.

Landskap

The Landskap is the meeting which is the nation’s supreme decision-making body. It is held twice per semester. It is the Landskap that elects the nation’s officials and full-timers. All members of Värmlands nation are welcome to participate. The Landskap usually ends with an informal and fun dinner.

Officials

The wonderful enthusiasts who make the nation what it is; by students for students. They do everything completely voluntary. Their responsibilities can be anything from putting up posters and writing in the nation’s newspaper to carrying banners at formal parties or handing out scholarships (the club workers are also examples of officials). It is great fun and an excellent way to make friends and memories for life. Contact the 1Q if you want to know more about how to become an official, and what you can do!

Recentior

A new student in Uppsala. Also called a “recce”. You are a recce your first year at the nation. The reccegask is a special gask, held at the beginning of each semester, to welcome you to Uppsala and to the nation. Contact the 1Q if you are interested in going.

Sexa

A fun informal dinner. For example, one is held after every Landskap!

Suit

The dress code for most gasks. This means a dark suit or knee-length dress. It does not have to be a tuxedo (tuxedos are basically never worn in Uppsala student life)!
